MURFREESBORO - Longtime provider at Murfreesboro Primary Care, Dr. Mike Alston, received the 2014 Chowan University Community Service Award on Saturday, October 11 as part of Homecoming fesitivies.

The award is given annually to a person in the community that best exhibits service to his or her fellow community members.

Kay Thomas, Senior Development Director at Chowan University, gave a personal testimony prior to Alston accepting the award.

"When Mike told me, back in the early nineties, that my husband had cancer and didn't have long to live, he asked me what he could do to help," Thomas said. "I told him to help me keep my daughters healthy, and through doctor visits and house calls, he has always strived to do just that. It's a testament to how much he cares about this community."

Alston accepted the award, albeit humbly, and gave his thanks to the community for supporting him and allowing him to serve in the community as long as he has.

"I do not feel like I am deserving of this award, but I humbly accept this great honor presented to me today by Chowan," Alston said. “I’ve been in this community by entire life, all but during school, and I have and will continue to enjoy practicing here in Hertford County and the surrounding area.”

Friends and family joined Alston for the award presentation. Alston was honored as the Community Service award recipient again during the Homecoming football game halftime festivities.
